New Driving Rules and Signs in Spain

Studying for your theory test? Learn these rules and recognise these signs.

New rules from October 2026

  • Electric scooters. Minimum age 15, with a helmet. At night or in poor visibility, use a light or reflective item visible from 150 metres away.
  • Motorcycles and mopeds. Riders and passengers need closed shoes on all roads and protective gloves outside town.
  • Cyclists using a bike lane, from the DGT's announcement of the new rules Passing a cyclist outside town. Leave 1.5 metres and stay at least 20 km/h below the road limit. With two or more lanes in your direction, change lanes completely.
  • Emergency corridors. In a motorway traffic jam, leave a path between the two lanes. With three or more lanes, leave it between the left lane and the next one.
  • Snow on a motorway. Do not overtake when snow makes driving difficult. Keep right, leaving the left lanes clear. With three or more lanes, you can also use the next lane.
